I used the past weekend browsing through Orkidea’s flyer collection. I managed to scan a bit less than half of them, nearly 500 images, of which 300 are now online. Pretty NoLife(tm) project, but lots of fun.
More flyers coming up soon, but while waiting dive deep into Finnish oldskool underground rave hype =>
Finnish Flyers on Flickr
After a very long time I came up with a flyer which made me look twice. This digital copy looks a bit lame, but a paper version really rocks. No glossy paper, no spot colours or fancy fonts. Just a cool idea and very good looking graphics. Definitely the flyer of the month. I’m happy people still make stuff like this.

To start the double-o-seven properly, I guess it’s time to sum up some of the moments of the past year.
Left Rovaniemi behind and moved to Helsinki. Getting a possibility of being part of Misc Management and working with some of the nicest guys in the southern electronic music scene has been more than delightful. The future looks exciting.
Got a possibility to travel a lot. Loved the Birkweiler wine fields. Saw Belfast, both sides of it.
Graduated. Wrote the Pro Gradu about Flyers in Electronic Music Culture.
After waiting for 11 years, finally saw Underworld live. Also enjoyed the Unity 10th Anniversary, both being the highlights of this year.
Finished remix of EBTG’s “Missing” and a remake of Innerself’s “Gautama”, released seven DJ-mixes and a couple of radio sets. Buried Worldwide Mix Selection podcast project and concentrated on DJ Orion’s podcast with a plenty of hi-quality guest mixes from Finnish artists.
Disliked Teosto and Gramex. Enjoyed some very good movies. Got sentimental while moving away from the north and couldn’t help looking back.
Experienced some very nice gigs such as Spinni in Tampere, Choon! in Turku, Rio88600 in Sotkamo and Sunburn in Kalajoki to mention just a few. Got new friends and got together with the old – humble, simple and honest people, who I – once again – just can’t give enough credit.
Made a new year resolution last year not to involve in any event production or promotion in spring 2006 – and got hands on way too many projects. Expecting the same to happen this year again.
Platinum Forums has a very nice collection of Finnish flyers online. Starting from 1993 and going all the way to the latest flyers, the collection offers an unique view to the visual culture around electronic music in Finland.

Luentoni klubi-, DJ- ja flyerikulttuurista Lapin Yliopiston Taiteiden tiedekunnassa LS231 huomenna maanantaina 3.4.2006 klo 13:15-17:00. Luento on osa populaarikulttuurin luentosarjaa.
Torstaina 6.4. Kaleva-lehden Peto-liitteessä juttu flyereistä ja flyerikulttuurista. Tsek.
Finnish Club Awardseissa valitaan tänäkin vuonna muunmuassa maan parasta flyeriä.
Flyer – Valtamediaa marginaalikulttuurissa
Pro Gradu on valmis. Flyer – Valtamediaa flyerikulttuurissa on ensimmäinen suomalaiseen flyerikulttuuriin perehtynyt työ, joka tutkii flyeriä nimenomaa mediailmiön näkökulmasta. Gradu on nyt ladattavissa .pdf-formaatissa.
Mikä on flyerin historia? Entä tulevaisuus? Toimiiko flyereiden katujako? Mistä flyereitä löydetään? Millaista kuvakieltä flyereissä käytetään? Millainen on flyerin elinkaari? Miten Etelä- ja Pohjois-Suomen flyerikulttuurit eroavat toisistaan? Millainen on flyerin suhde muihin medioihin?
Flyer – valtamediaa marginaalikulttuurissa menee painoon 13.03.2006.
Tsekkaa kaikki graduflyerit. Kahdella sivulla muunmuassa Screen-, Labyrinth-, Miau!-, Illusions- ja Time Tunnel-flyereitä sekä muutamia one-off-tapahtumien flaikkuja. Enjoy :)
I added 25 new flyers to my online flyer collection. Mainly works from Niitty‘s parties and a couple of 404 flyers.
See them all – click here!. The latest are on the bottom of the page.
Why don’t people just concentrate on simplicity when making their flyers? Levitation has really enjoyable simple artwork although the composition of the text disturbs me a bit.
Still definitely the best flyer I’ve seen this week, I’d wish to have a real copy of this.
Info of the party available here.
As this blog and the main page is getting more and more visitors from abroad (Spain, Germany, Canada, Netherlands, US, UK, Russia etc…), I started to think it would be a good idea to share some thoughts also in English.
I spent the Sunday afternoon in Flickr making it easier to browse the online flyer collection which I have there. First I uploaded over 50 new flyers and then tagged most of the flyers and sorted them by the city.
It means that now you can easily see some Finnish flyer art and compare the art of clubbing in different cities.
Try it: Flyers from Rovaniemi, Oulu, Haapavesi, Helsinki, Tampere, Turku , Kalajoki and Raahe. Or just see Flyers from Northern Finland or All Flyers. And my favourite: Oldskool flyers.
While searching for the new flyers to add, I found some nice pieces of art. Take a look:
Katharsis-event in Helsinki – really simple and quite unusual style. Only two colours on the front side and three on the back. If I remember right, their club Rauta had more or less the same style. I wish I’d see more of these.
Discomob in Helsinki. I’m always wondering is club Miau! really the only club in Finland brave enough to use humour on their flyers. This one is a good try – makes you at least read the flyer :) I can’t say whether all this “application”-stuff takes the focus away from the real content – the event information – but at least it’s different.
Aeroloft, Helsinki. This “arrival”/”departure” idea has been used a million times but somehow I like the simplicity of this. Mixing Finnish and English isn’t probably the best idea and this air hostess / nurse mixture is quite confusing, but still… OK, this might still need some improvement, but it succeeds to be relaxing. The logo reminds me of the Russian flag, though. Weird, eh?
