Pretty productive weekend

By | DJ, In English, Music, Photos & Videos | No Comments

A remix of Tilt’s “I Dream” got nearly finished last weekend. Here’s a short clip of what’s coming up next:

Snare Rush Collage.
Weird collage of clips and videos from the past…
You got to love this YouTube-quality… :P Here’s a link to a better quality mp4-file => download (38mb).

And finally a peek to the iTunes Music Folder.
Quite a nice way to present one’s musical taste in a visual way.

MySpace weakness

By | Entertainment, In English, Links | No Comments

After criticizing MySpace big time, I decided to give a try (I’m so weak, I know…).

DJ Orion @ MySpace

And after browsing through some profiles I still don’t get it: What’s the point of adding dozens of contacts to one’s friends list if you haven’t ever even met or talked to these people? Or is it just so cool of having 50 celebrities as your “friends”?

Well, let’s see where this ends up. I can’t help being skeptical.

TT13 web open

By | In English | No Comments

Time Tunnel 13 website is open. Too bad H.A.N.D boys didn’t make a video of last year’s great event which was held at amazing looking Uusi Seurahuone.
While waiting the Utah Saints music videos to appear to the official website, there’s always YouTube for the impatient ones :)

Orion joins Misc Management

By | DJ, In English | No Comments

BIO UPDATE
First of all, there are two updates of the website. Biography is again back up-to-date and a bit wider than the former version.

DOWNLOAD MIX
Then, Spinni 10 year anniversary mix is now available for downloading on the mixes site. It was podcasted already some time ago, but if you’re not into any casts, now is a good chance to download it. The mix includes music from artists like Junkie XL, Starecase, Hybrid, David Forbes, Transa etc. Full length mix with old and new tracks included.

ORION JOINS MISC MANAGEMENT
Orion joined Misc Management DJ booking agency earlier this week. Misc Management is the first truly professional, dance music oriented dj booking agency – management located in Helsinki, Finland. As well as being part of Misc’s Artist Roster, Orion also works as part of the Misc Management staff from now on. More news concerning the subject should be available pretty soon.

Fortune cookies

This time the content of the fortune cookie really hit me. More bass? :)
The low tones are the most effective

I wonder why Siemens never brought this refrigerator type to Finland…

Not to mention this oven:
Persbusch!

Visiting Germany was once again very rewarding. Local record stores didn’t fail me – and so didn’t Bruce ;) Did you know that the Die Hard hero has released music on Motown? Neither did I.

The first news from Helsinki

By | Blogs & Podcasts, Civilian life, In English, Music, Photos & Videos | No Comments

The week has passed incredibly fast. It’s been all about moving, doing the infamous vinyylijumppa to the second floor without any elevator and piecing together new furniture.

I guess carrying the music collection around was some sort of a last temptation to forget the vinyl, convert everything to CD-format and save your back from breaking before your 30th anniversary. I’m sure there was someone whispering to my ear “How much would that weight in mp3-format…?” when I climbed up the stairs with the 40kg vinyl cases.

Now after four full moving days quite much everything is done and we’ll be heading to Germany for nine days on Monday. I managed to finish most of the stuff on my todo-list despite the hurry:

First of all, after building up the new DJ-setup (which must be the best I’ve ever had what comes to sound and comfort) I recorded Spinni’s 10 Year Anniversary Mix. Spinni celebrates their ten year old way through the Tampere club history (more info here) and this “official” mix more or less describes the sound of the event’s second day. Techy progressive, breaks and trance in spirit of the oldskool, with a couple of fresh exceptions. Those who are subscribed to the podcast should get the mix any time soon, but you’ll find the link on the forums and Spinni’s website a bit later, too.

I visited Danceteria, DTM last night. Good way to get the first touch to Helsinki clubland – the place was crowded and atmosphere high. I shot restlessly a couple of photos while meeting new people and I have to say I felt pretty welcome – there were really nice people around.

Wait

The future looks bright. In October I’ll be heading to Northern Ireland for a week and before that I’ll hope to have some announcements to be made about some club and music related things. Oh, and nearly forgot – New York City based fitness radio station Exercise Radio starts to air some mixes of mine on their exercise related shows. It seems that vinyylijumppa isn’t the only way to get fit with vinyls ;)

And as a postscript: It’s never too late to start to love music. Or too early…
Heavy music has young fans...

DJ Thomas on the podcast and more upcoming mixes

By | Blogs & Podcasts, In English | No Comments

Orion’s podcast was updated a moment ago. A 45min guest mix from DJ Thomas should be on the computers of the subscribers pretty soon. Read more about the guest appearance of DJ Thomas (includes the instructions for subscribing, too)

Guest mix: DJ Thomas (Tornio, Finland)

hernan cattaneo & john tonks – sirocco (renaissance)
echomen – spirit (forensic)
4 tune 500 – dancing in the dark (house works)
redanka – out of the dark (whoop!)
nerva – arzamas-16 (whoop!)
josh gabriel – wave 3, charlie may’s undertow mix (nebula promo)

Enjoy :)

Currently making the last plans for collaborative mixtape with DJ Kaasi, I might be able to promise that it will be online by the end of this month.
I’m excited of the result – last time, in March 2005, we mixed 17 tracks together in 60 minutes. Now we might make it still a bit better. The speed is not the reason of excitement, though. Kaasi has a long background in house music – combining his tracks and style with mine produced already last time an interesting wholeness. Let’s see where it gets this time :)

Goodbye WMS

By | Blogs & Podcasts, In English | No Comments

First some sad news. I will stop hosting and casting Worldwide Mix Selections podcast.

Worldwide Mix Selections has been quite a successful project. After the 12th of December ’05 we’ve podcasted over 110 different mixes. Each of them has reached 200-400 subscribers. It’s been a nice way to show that there are SO many good deejays around sharing good music of which most of us hasn’t ever heard.

Anyway, I’ll concentrate from now on only on my private podcast on a monthly basis and leave WMS behind. Might be that there is someone who would like to continue the project but if not, the casts will stop in the near future.

Confirmation

By | Civilian life, In English, Photos & Videos | No Comments

I promised earlier to confirm when everything’s set for moving away from Rovaniemi. So this is it, 100% confirmation. I’ll be heading to Helsinki on the first of August. Interesting autumn ahead.

I think now it’s time more or less to look back. These five years have been incredible in many ways. Here’s a Short Story of the Northern Club Life – the electronic music scene in Northern Finland 2001-2005 as I remember it. Thanks to all of you who were involved in a way or another – you know why :)

Download problems?

By | Blogs & Podcasts, In English, Music | No Comments

Every now and then I hear complaints that someone is unable to download the mixes on this site.

The most common problems are:
1) When left clicked, the link does not save but opens a new Firefox window and starts to play.
2) When saved directly (Save Target As), the mix is saved as a kuuntele.php file.

Here are the solutions:
1) Check how your browser handles the mp3-files. You can change the Download Actions in Firefox easily: Preferences => Downloads => Download Actions
1.2) If this does not solve the problem, just left click the link and let it open in a new window. The mix starts to play. Select File => Save Page As. Now you can download the mix and close the window.
2) If you rather right click and save the file as “kuuntele.php”, make sure you rename the file afterwards. Anything with an ending “.mp3” will do. All the mixes on this site have full ID3-tags so they will show up correctly in your iTunes or Winamp, no matter what the file name is.

Photocasting

By | In English, Photos & Videos | No Comments

Found a nice way to share the photos I’ve recently taken. I don’t post every single uploaded photo to this blog so if you want to stay updated with my Photo Stream (or Photocast, whatever), now it’s easier than ever (requires iPhoto OR any other feedreader).

1) Copy this URL: http://www.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?id=37218967@N00&format=rss_200
2) Go to http://phlikr.3xi.org/
3) Paste the URL, click the button of your choice and enjoy the up-to-date photo stream.

ET (won't) phone home.
Photo: Feedreader at its best.

Tiskijukka

Got 25 nice house & trance classics from a retired DJ. Really amazing old tracks, but the condition wasn’t too good. Luckily no scratches, just dust and dirt which meant spending some time as a dish jockey.

The Blink Of An Eye

By | In English, Photos & Videos | No Comments

While Flickr Interestingess might be just the playground of the professional photographers on Flickr, the new “The Blink of an Eye” group has a better idea. Each user can present the best photo he/she has ever shot (and uploaded to Flickr). I think this gives a way better view to what Flickr really has to offer than this “Interestingness”. Check the slideshow (or view the photos separately).

Human Turntable

By | DJ, In English, Photos & Videos | No Comments

OK, this clip is just a teaser. Tomorrow morning I’m going to upload another DMC-clip: 15 years ago, in 1991, Finnish DJ Eliot Ness made it to the third place in DMC World DJ Championships. With some help from DJ Kaasi, I hunted down a clip from his performance. The tricks are quite stunning, I must say.

But before Mr. Eliot’s clip, here’s the famous Human Turntable trick. Stay tuned.

DJs and Music Marketing

By | DJ, In English | One Comment

You’re listening to a radio channel, DJ-set or podcast and hear a song which you definitely want to have. What do you do?

Far too many people trust on P2P programs when they want to find a track which is simply just too good. They download it illegally, because it’s easy and free – but also because they don’t know (or care) how to get it otherwise.

DJs are a part of music marketing, you can’t deny that. They know where to buy the best tracks, they know how to find good music legally, they know how to hear about the new music which hasn’t even gotten on the charts. So why wouldn’t they share this knowledge?

At the moment DJs are just writing their TOP20-charts for two purposes: to show the promoters that they are active and they should be booked AND to show the other DJs that they have tracks which the other DJs do not have. Still – too often I hear on the clubs some clubber asking the question: “This is so cool music – where can you buy this kind of stuff?”

Now – why wouldn’t DJs also write their charts for the music freakz who would just die to get to listen the Top20 Chart tracks at home? It would be good promotion for the electronic music, it would keep it alive. And it would be good promotion for the DJ – the more people would come to his website and actually get to HEAR the music alongside all this namedropping, the more discussion there would be around the DJ him/herself. And this discussion (read: publicity) is what all these disc jockeys want, right?

Now how would this happen? Simple. Just by linking the chart tunes to the shops where they are available.
I’ll be writing my new Top Choices chart soon here and adding the links where these records are available to buy. Maybe it helps you to find better music and more importantly – better sources of good music.

Oh, quite a nice way to combine effective music promotion, DJ-mixes and podcast is Beatport’s podcast. Subscribe and listen, you’ll see why.
