I’m returning to Turku this Friday to celebrate the local Liquid Crystal Sounds club promoter’s – DJ Progression’s 30th birthday. He is throwing a party at Klubi with Joonas Hahmo, himself and me sharing the sounds.
Funny coincidence – we almost have the same birthdate, I’m having my own 30th anniversary today so it feels great to join the birthday vibes on Friday. In addition to the latest proggy/trance tunes, I’ll be grabbing some old classics with me – just to remind myself that it’s just us getting old, not the good music ;)

This Saturday Chooned event hits Messukeskus, Turku. The event is among the biggest electronic music events organized in Turku area in years and with 16 Bit Lolitas, Sean Tyas and Agnelli & Nelson headlining it’s definitely one of the most interesting. Sound-wise the event looks very strong and I’m looking forward to hear 16 Bit Lolitas live. Their sound has evolved to more technoish direction which – in my opinion – hasn’t been only a good thing, but I’m sure also the new less uplifting tunes will be strong enough from a big PA system.
The main event starts already at 19:00 and goes on until 03. The Finnish lineup includes local Choon club resident Jussi Soro and promoter Nenna and my YleX colleague OlliS.
At 03:00 the party has a short break (thanks to Finnish legislation) and continues at 05:00 sharp in the centrum of Turku at Klubi. The afterparty is organized by LCS possé, who have been lately travelling around Finland with their club concept and several foreign prog talents.
I’ll be starting the afterparty with 1,5h set of trancey tunes and local heroes Homegrove, Progression, Ali King, Mick Elsa and DJ Seb will follow.
Looking very, very much forward to another Turku excursion.
Bad news. Club Diiva event in Åbo Diskotek, Turku has been cancelled due to the financial problems of the venue. This is a very sad situation, not only because it’s the first gig I’ve ever needed to cancel during the past ten years, but also knowing that the promoters are super nice and I’d never wished something like this to them. This is already the second club night in Turku suffering of sudden cancellations during this autumn, I’m hoping this won’t become a trend.
My best wishes to all Turku clubbers and Diiva possé – I hope we can make the event happen in the near future.

UMF on miltei pakotettu lopettamaan toimintansa Turussa varsin mielenkiintoisten vaiheiden jälkeen. Turun kaupunginhallitus hylkäsi avustushakemuksemme ja olemme varsin lähellä konkurssia.
Pistän tässä tätä infoa tännekin, sillä uskon, että tämä saattaa kiinnostaa jotakuta.
Pitemmittä puheitta – alla kaupungille osoitettu hakemus, josta käy ilmi ne seikat, jotka ovat johtaneet tähän tilanteeseen:
AVUSTUSHAKEMUS
Turun kaupunginhallitusUuden Musiikin Festivaalia (UMF) järjestävä Parkpark Oy anoo 105 000 euroa Turun kaupunginhallitukselta tämän vuoden festivaalin tappioiden kattamiseen sekä toiminnan rahoittamiseen jatkossa. Tämän lisäksi festivaali anoo vuosille 2009 – 2011 tapahtuman järjestämiseen 55 000 euroa per vuosi. UMF on pakotettu lopettamaan toimintansa ja hakeutumaan konkurssiin, mikäli sitä ei pystytä kyseisillä summilla avustamaan. Toivomme kaupunginhallitukselta asian mahdollisimman nopeaa käsittelyä, sillä Parkpark Oy on ajautumassa perintäkierteeseen ja yrityksen kassa on tyhjä.
Tämän vuoden UMF on raskaasti tappiollinen; syitä tähän on monia, mutta päällimmäisinä ovat Turun kaupungin kiinteistölaitoksen maankäyttölupahakemuksen käsittelyn hitaus sekä Turun poliisilaitoksen asettamat kohtuuttomat järjestysmiesmäärät.
UMF jätti maaliskuussa maankäyttölupahakemuksen kiinteistölautakunnalle, mutta lupa myönnettiin vasta kesäkuun lopussa. Tämä johti täysin kestämättömään tilanteeseen; festivaalin markkinointi ja tiedotus myöhästyivät kuukausia. UMF kykeni lähettämään ensimmäisen lehdistötiedotteensa vasta neljä viikkoa ennen tapahtumaa, juuri ihmisten pahimman lomasesongin aikana. Tämä johti osaltaan siihen, että kävijätavoitteista jäätiin 35 prosenttia.
UMF ja Turun poliisilaitos olivat varsin erimielisiä lähes kaikesta festivaalin toimintaan liittyvästä. Hakiessamme lääninhallitukselta anniskelulupien jatkoaikaa, poliisin lausunto tähän oli jostain syystä kielteinen. Toimitettuamme lisäselvityksiä alkoholiviranomaisille, lääninhallitus kuitenkin päätyi kannallemme ja jatkoaikaluvat myönnettiin 03.00 saakka. Tämän jälkeen poliisi antoi määräyksen, että musiikin on kuitenkin loputtava jo kello 02.00 – tämä olisi johtanut mielestämme melkoisen naurettavaan tilanteeseen, joten valitimme päätöksestä Turun hallinto-oikeuteen, joka kumosi poliisin päätöksen. Tämäkään ei riittänyt poliisille – kolme päivää ennen tapahtuman alkua poliisilaitos päätti kolminkertaistaa järjestysmiesmäärämme. Järjestysmieskulut nousivat 43 000 euroon, mikä on omiaan kaatamaan koko festivaalin talouden. Poliisilaitoksen päätös on mielestämme sinänsä perusteeton, UMF:in historiassa ei ole ollut koskaan minkäänlaisia lieveilmiöitä: ei järjestyshäiriöitä, varkauksia, pahoinpitelyjä yms. Tänä vuonna järjestyshäiriöitä oli yksi, kun joku tapahtumasta ulkopuolinen oli saanut päähänsä kiivetä aidan yli. Kyseessä on rauhallinen, aidosti musiikkiin keskittynyt, kansainvälisesti laajalti arvostettu tapahtuma.
Turun kaupungin avustustoimikunta on tähän mennessä tukenut UMF:ia 15 000 eurolla vuodessa, mutta samanaikaisesti esimerkiksi tänä vuonna kaupunki on perinyt festivaalilta erinäisinä vuokrina ja maankäyttölupina yli 14 000 euroa. Näin ollen itse tapahtumaan ydintekemiseen eli ohjelmaan, markkinointiin, palkkoihin ja tiedotukseen kaupungin tuesta on jäänyt vain muutamia satoja euroja. Tilanne on sinänsä melko mielenkiintoinen, jos sitä verrataan samankaltaiseen Helsingissä järjestettävään Flow-festivaaliin, jonka julkinen tuki Helsingin kaupungilta ja Helsingin Juhlaviikoilta on yli kymmenkertainen UMF:in tukeen verrattuna. Myös lupa-asiat ovat sujuneet Flow-festivaalin kannalta paljon nopeammassa aikataulussa. Ei olekaan siis ihme, että Flow veti tänä vuonna Helsingin Suvilahteen ennätysyleisönsä, 22 000 ihmistä.
UMF on joka vuosi yrittänyt saada kaupungin tukeensa korotusta tässä onnistumatta. UMF on kulttuurituotantona ollut harvinaisen omarahoitteinen. Haluamme myös painottaa, että ensimmäinen UMF vuonna 2004 tehtiin ilman minkäänlaista kaupungin avustusta.
UMF on vahvasti mukana 2011-hankkeessa ja Cay Sevonin kanssa käydyissä keskusteluissa on tullut raikkaasti esiin se tosiasia, että vuonna 2011 UMF voisi olla yksi koko vuoden todellisia huippukohtia.
Toivommekin, että kaupunginhallituksen jäsenet pohtivat päätöstä tehdessään seuraavia seikkoja:
• UMF:in merkitys Turun imagolle.
• UMF:in merkitys Turun kulttuuripääkaupunkivuodelle.
• UMF:in taloudellinen merkitys kaupungille – festivaali vetää vuosittain tuhansia ulkopaikkakuntalaisia kaupunkiin. 75 % kävijöistä on tutkitusti pääkaupunkiseudulta, 8 % ulkomailta ja loput Turusta. Turkulaiset yritykset (mm. hotellit, ravintolat, taksit, kaupat) hyötyvät välillisesti UMF:ista useilla sadoilla tuhansilla euroilla vuosittain.
• UMF:in merkitys Turun kulttuurielämälle.
• UMF:in merkitys Turun vetovoimaisuudelle.
• UMF:in merkitys Turun turismille.
• Toivomme myös päättäjien huomioivan UMF:in tekijöiden aikaisemmat palkitut kulttuurituotannot (Kulttuuriteltta Ständi 1998, Kulttuuriklubi Ständi 1999, Koneisto 2000-01, Bar Päiväkoti 2001-2006).UMF:in halu jatkaa toimintaansa Turussa on karanneen kalan kokoinen.

Thank You Turku & Pinky possé! It was again another fantastic Turku experience, this time a bit on a trancey tip. I really appreciated getting to play a three hour warm-up set as these days people tend to arrive rather after midnight than at half past ten. However, the floor was crowded already well before 00:00, people on the party mood and good vibe all over the place. Komytea continued where I left and Joonas Hahmo ended the night with a style. I can’t help hyping the new track from Joonas, “Tampere By Night”, which is an amazing follow-up for Cocktail Bar, possibly even better. Rumours say it might be featured on the upcoming AnjunaBeats Vol.6 compilation before the actual release.

Another Turku visit ahead this Saturday. I’ve had such an amount of great experiences from Turku lately and I’m expecting this to be nothing less. Club Pinky starts its season by inviting two domestic Anjunabeats/AnjunaDeep artists in, Joonas Hahmo and Komytea. Needless to say, I’m very happy of getting an invitation to start the night with a longish three hour set of progressive house with some trancey flavor. I’m really looking forward to this one. Late but heartly thank-yous to Turku party people and Diiva UG -posse for making a 3 year birthday party worth remembering and giving me a possibility of being there. The night was fantastic, the cellar absolutely one of the most intimate and friendly venues I’ve witnessed in Finland and Lank and Vertigo very warm and professional hosts with a great music taste. The guys are going to play in Oulu in a month or so, make sure to check them out if you’re in the area. Also thumbs up to Niska who played a rocking warm-up set with a good electro vibe. Very nice guy and a talent to keep an eye on.
I started my Diiva UG set with a bit more progressive and melodic sound which obviously wasn’t the hottest stuff for the cellar-like surroundings and I turned after a track or two to slightly more technoish and rough sound which seemed to be the thing. The crowd was on a birthday party mood and if you could see something through the enormous amount of smoke, they were smiles :) The tracks of the night would be Quivver – Surin (Lutzenkirchen remix), Freeflow 45 – PeakTime and Dennis Sheperd – Infinity. Metaverse hits the road this weekend again and arrives to Klubi, Turku and Hämeensilta, Tampere. I’m waiting for these events a lot, especially seeing the much hyped and little used Hämeensilta as a club venue.
The tour is running very well at the moment. We just got the news that Metaverse record has hit #16 on the official Finnish chart. That’s very good news and on my behalf I deliver the humblest Thank Yous for the support. It’s always awesome to see electronic music hitting the charts.

I’m heading today to Tampere to attend Madwave weekend. Madwave events will take place both in Tampere and Turku, Friday and Saturday, David West headlining both nights.
I’m very excited – playing at the same event with David in Oulu’s “Northern e’Motion ’07” was just amazing not to mention the last trip to Tampere’s “Romance” event some months ago. It’s been a while that I’ve been playing in Turku, but the last experiences at “LCS” and “Choon!” were simply great.
All in all, I think the combination of David West, Tampere and Turku is a rare enough to force all the progheads out to party. The lineup also includes very strong domestic spinners – Romance’s head honcho DJ Flight; Joonas Hahmo, one of the most interesting producers at the moment and the Sergei Shkuroff’s & D.N.A‘s full-on back2back.
After the Turku event – on Sunday morning – I’ll be travelling with David West back to Helsinki. David’s spinning at Pussy Club afterparty in Rose Garden with Mr.A.

Viime sunnuntain keikka Choon!-klubilla ylitti kaikki odotukset. Vaikka tiedossa oli, että klubia järjestetään erittäin ammattitaitoisesti, oli todellisuus kuulopuheita parempaa. Loistavasti suunniteltu valot ja ääni, screenin toteutus sekä erinomainen monitorointi takasivat upean soittoympäristön. Lisäksi yleisö oli erinomaista ja otti vastaan soundia laidasta laitaan – lautasille etsiytyi progemman soundin ja perusleppoisan trancen lisäksi vähän teknompaa ja junnaavampaakin pyörittelyä.
Omaa settiä ennen KimiK rakenteli erittäin monimuotoisen kokonaisuuden omaa härömpää soundiaan ja kaunista progetrancea. Viimeinen, miehen oma remiksi Perwertin Pianosta ei jättänyt kylmäksi – kunpa aina saisi jatkaa soittoaan noin täydellisesti kasatun warmupin perään.
Turun omat pojat Josh ja Jussi Soro yllättivät myös positiivisesti. Josh räjäytti potin tutummilla ja soundiltaan tuoreemmilla raidoilla oman vanhempaan tranceen kääntyneen loppusettini perään ja vakuutti myös teknisellä osaamisellaan. Residentti puolestaan osoitti taas kotikenttäetunsa ja hallitsi varmoin elein lattiaa hyvillä biisivalinnoilla ja alun progressiivisemmalla aloituksella. Ja kävihän Darudekin lavalla pyöräyttämässä hieman musiikkia vappujuhlijoille.
Kaikenkaikkiaan Choon vaikuttaa yhdestä tämänhetken parhaimmin järjestetystä ja hoidetusta tranceklubista, toivomme projektille pitkää ikää :)
