I Love Kiksu was a very well organized and successful trance event – there aren’t too many of those these days. I was surprised how early the dance floor got crowded – I was expecting people to stay home longer after such a warm day, but it seems you can always trust trance fans ;)
Jokke started the night with 100% vinyl set, plenty of great oldish tracks and fresh releases. A great warmup from the guy who has been keeping the scene warm for god-knows-how-many years. It was great to get to play after him. After a couple of trys with pretty new tunes I decided to count on tracks with were a bit more familiar. Not surprisingly, a bit more technoish tracks like Boogie Nights and Surin remix didn’t go down too well, but I was happy of the reaction to the proggy and even houseish tracks like Mystify remix and Sweet Harmony re-make. It’s good to see that you don’t need 145bpm energy trance anymore in a trance event to push the spirit high and get the hands in the air. 127bpm and well fitting bassline will do just fine (Jaytech/Dinka, anyone? ;). DJ DNA finished the night well with his stage charisma and driving two hour trance set in a true I Love Kiksu stylé :)

I survived Konemetsä. Barely. Due to problems with the voice blog, you missed some hilarious moments recorded live, but I try to share the muddy moments by writing.
Konemetsä is a yearly open air festival located in Marttila, Finland. It’s basically in the middle of nothing, nearly a two hour drive from Helsinki and somewhat less from Turku. Getting there was a small logistic challenge and I ended up getting an official artist ride 11 hours before my set.
To make a long story short: I joined picking up from airport an Australian/Indian/English guy, who said Russians are godless, was amazed by GMS’ & Astrix’s excellent psy-trance and the setup of the Konemetsä main stage, got totally wet in the heavy rain during the morning hours, witnessed festival area turning muddy, slept three hours in a random caravan next to two very drunk Swedish guys, woke up to the middle of cocaine snorting merry-go-round, got very muddy and finally played a three hour morning set to the waking festival audience in the Konemetsä chill-out tent. It was the best chill-out gig experience so far for me – perfect weather, the first rays of sun, people getting out from their sleeping bags, eating breakfast and just being comfortable. An uncompromisingly good mood was in the air.
The festival producers Pete & Pete were incredibly nice, feet on the ground, ready to help and very professional guys. It was a pleasure spending some time together. Big thanks also to our driver for a good company and loads of fun all the way from Helsinki to Marttila.
The first 1,5h of my From Rural To Urban themed set the sound was more acoustic related, easier campfire chill-out and grew bigger little by little as the people woke up. The last hour was more urban – more beats, long pads and a bit more complex electronic touch. For a better view, see the full tracklist below:

When you’re doing club events and clubbing as a lifestyle, hobby and work at some point you just lose big amount of the enthusiasm of going out and to the clubs. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still very nice and enjoyable, but you’re lacking the excitingness.
The Tullikamari raves in Tampere in ’94-’96 and Love Parade in ’99 were fantastic experiences for a young teenage boy, but I haven’t had a similar huge emotion rush in a party too many times ever since.
Well, Pacifique had it all. The exciting and nostalgic boom in your chest, anxious waiting to get there and a pure and energetic feeling of happiness. I had heard about the uplifting water splashing at the main arena, but that and several other details are just something you can’t describe if you haven’t been there yourself.
It was a totally unique concept well executed. I’m happy of getting the possibility of being there last night.

Despite of everything what I heard about the comfort of playing at Uniq, the sound was pretty good after all. Ok, I have to admit that I had to have the monitors awfully loud to be able to be 100% sure of what I was doing. Better located monitor speakers would do a lot for that place from the DJ’s point of view. Anyway – the place was more crowded than on earlier wednesdays and music wasn’t that trance as I expected. Matthew Heath and Anton Sonin kept playing pretty housey material before me, so I delayed playing the progressive/trance tracks, too and chose a bit more electroish start.

Friday night was dedicated to easy house music. I was invited to a local club Helmi to play the last set. Helmi’s target group are more mainstream chart lovers than electronic music freaks so I ended up leaving my TOP20 records at home and chose something totally different. Before my slot, DJ Hesher played quality breaks, funk and disco spiced with määäd scratching and really had the dancefloor under control. When starting, I have to admit, I wasn’t the most confident person on that club but the end of the night ended up to be really enjoyable and refreshing. No matter what they say about street credibility, but it really makes you see DJing from a new point of view when you’re playing something completely different every once in a while.

Saturday in Oulu was more an ordinary club night. I warmed up Magellan Project/Alt-F4/Avanto -boys on a local Illumination club. Even though quality electronic music nights are getting more and more famous in (Northern) Finland, the nature of Finns still stays the same – a suddenly crazy going bar tells that heavy metal band Lordi winning the Eurovision Song Contest is definitely more interesting than a new remix of Union Jack’s Two Full Moons And A Trout ;)
Another enjoyable night – these houseprogressive gems tend to work well in Oulu, time after time.

Järjestelyt pelasivat esimerkillisesti ja kokonaiskuva jäi erittäin positiiviseksi. Mitäpä muuta tosin olisi odottanutkaan :) Volume oli laitettu hyvännäköiseksi ja lämppärisetti oli erittäin mukava soittaa. Soitin alussa vähän tummempaa tribal/proge-vaikutteista soundia ja sieltä muutaman tunnelmoinnin kautta vähän melodisempaan ja ajavampaan nykytranceen.
Kemin No:Status-päätösilta nousi odotetusti kauden parhaaksi. Tunnelma oli mainio, busseilla Rovaniemeltä saapunut yleisö täytti lattian heti alusta ja vierasartistit CiD ja Dallas Superstars hoitivat potin odotetusti. Paljon hymyileviä kasvoja ja hyvää musiikkia, juurikaan muuta ei onnistuneeseen iltaan tarvita :)

Illumination jyräsi perjantaina Rovaniemen Doriksessa. Ensimmäistä kertaa paikalle oli tuotu etelän Illuminationeista tutut decot, jotka toivat kieltämättä kivaa ilmettä pääpuolelle. Pikkupuolesta oli kankailla ja järeällä savukoneella saatu sopivan luolamainen stage, johon hieman raskaampi ja UGmpi poljento sopi kuin nenä päähän.
Oma setti oli sekoitus raakaa elektrohousea (tyyliin Raw Vision), vanhempaa ja kokeellisempaa teknoa ja acidia. BPM pyöri koko setin ajan 120-123 välissä, joka sopi alkuillan raskaan soundin settiin yllättävänkin kivasti. 75 minuutin settiin mahtui 18 raitaa:

Suosittelen tsekkaamaan Klabin tuotannoista hieman vanhemman Big Room-miksauksen ja viimeisimmän RadioMP 23.7:n. Toivottavasti miestä nähdään vielä pohjoisessa.
Lauantain Hot Sun Oulaisissa oli mielenkiintoinen kokemus. Hotelli Sun, jossa tapahtuma pidettiin, oli ilmiselvä Hohto-elokuvan Overlook Hotel. Pitkiä käytäviä, tummanpunaisia tunnelmavaloja, 70-luvun lopun sisustus ja tietty autius kaikkialla. Kaiken kruunasi, että olin ainoa henkilö, joka yöpyi hotellissa tuona yönä. Heeere’s Johnny!
Ei mutta hei, Hohtohan on lämminhenkinen perhe-elokuva. Katso vaikka.
Tiukka bassolinjahouse oli selvästi Oulaisten juttu – löysäily ei juuri tuottanut tulosta. Mashtronicin biisit saivat kyytiä samoin kuin jo aiemmin hehkuttamani chart-ykkönen, Fuego. Tracklistiä ei parin tunnin setistä tullut kerättyä valitettavasti kasaan, mutta samaa soundia on luvassa ensi viikonlopun Discotech-kemuissa Tivolissa ja Kemin Club Nemossa No:Status-klubilla.
Orkidean levynjulkaisukiertueen avaus onnistui perjantaina Rovaniemen NiteTrainissa yli odotusten. NiteTrain jäi vain pienen harppauksen päähän kaikkien aikojen yleisöennätyksestään ja myi loppuun reilusti ennen puoltayötä. Kaasi lämmitti tanssilattian näppärästi bassovoittoisella soundilla ja Orkidea jatkoi varmasti koko 3,5 tunnin mittaisen settinsä läpi housea, progempaa soundia ja trancea yhdistellen. Viimeisinä raitoina soineiden Way Out Westin Ajaren ja BT:n Flaming Junen aikana tunnelma oli käsinkosketeltava.
Rovaniemi-skene voi hyvin :)
Lauantaina suuntasimme Kalajoen Dyyniin, joka hostasi niinikään kiertuetta. Tiukan aikataulun ja sunnuntain paluumatkaa hankaloittaneiden logististen ongelmien vuoksi majapaikkana toimineesta hävyttömästä luksusmökistä ei paljoa ehtinyt saada irti, mutta hyvä ilta Dyynissä korvasi lekottelun puutteen.
Oma lämmittelysetti oli sekoitus hidasta techimpää, groovea housea ja melodisempia ralleja. Seinille ei tarvinnut soitella vaan NiteTrainin tapaan väkeä valui paikalle heti ovien avaamisen myötä.
Hieno ilta ja upea viikonloppu kaikkinensa. Tästä on hyvä jatkaa kohti Jackkia.

Time Tunnel ei jällenkään pettänyt. Uusi Seurahuone nousi hetkessä Oulun ykkösklubivenueksi ja kaikki – siis kaikki – toimi ongelmitta ja vakaalla H.A.N.D-ammattitaidolla.
Oli erittäin positiivinen fiilis lämmittää pääsali Jimi Tenorin settiä varten kevyttä housea, breakbeattia, elektrompaa housea, teknoa ja oldskool-klasareita sekoitellen. Pääsali oli Foxiaa huomattavasti intiimimpi ja lämpimämpi – yleisö oli lähellä ja tunnelma onnellinen.
Jimin setin jälkeen tunnelma vei soundia tiukempaan ja raskaampaankin poljentoon. Altern8:n tyypit tarttuivat meininkiin mukaan ja potkivat lisää vauhtia scratcheilla ja muilla kikoilla soittamani loppusetin päälle kolmen levarin ja kahden mikserin voimin samanaikaisesti. The finest hour. :)
Oman settinsä miehet hoitivat ihailtavalla tarkkuudella. Kolmen levarin ja kahden miksarin kanssa pelaaminen sujui saumattomasti yhteen ja yleisöä lämmittivät lähestulkoon kaikki 90-luvun alun tärkeät biisit. Tunnetuimmista mainittakoon mm. Sweet Harmony, Pump Up The Jam, Out Of Space, Let Me Be Your Fantasy ja tietysti Altern8:n omat biisit. Osui.
