I think many of us could agree that we had one of the best ONE events last night (Facebook event). With the most probability it was also the last event at Pellava which is really a shame as the place was now really showing what it’s capable of.

It was so great to see loads of oldskool faces – not only from Tampere but all the way from Helsinki, Kouvola, Lahti etc. – coming to rave in the spirit of classic tunes from the past years. Okiru warmed up the floor with superb progressive classics (tracklist, anyone?:) and showed the mad mixing skills have definitely not corroded during the years.

Coma & KimiK followed with 100% vinyl set containing really bassheavy, driving proggy Tampere classics from Miau! and Tunnel era, ending their set to Bedrock’s Heaven Scent and Deepsky’s Stargazer with proper 138bpm.
As said to KimiK in the booth – no matter what you play after those tunes – it just sounds worse :)

I had a very intense 45min set (all-in-all the set lengths were very short due to closing time at 03:00), playing ONE classics – the tracks which have been particularly memorable during the ONE years and tracks which have become classics at Tanssitalo or Pellava. The full tracklist is below.

Finally, Cosmicman took the last hour to early 2000 style trancey direction which seemed to go down very well and ended his set with legendary twothousand-something kixu classic I Love You, which summed up the night nicely.

But the artists didn’t make the night – it was the fantastic crowd. They don’t talk about Tampere-fiilis in vain. It was the most open-minded, happily careless and most intense audience I’ve experienced in Tampere in many, many, many years. Right people in the right place. One family :)

The ONE afterparty couldn’t have been better either. Starting at 03:00 in the very centrum of Tampere, afterhour maestros Flight and Paul Easy dropped quality tech-house and techno choons to nearly 250 party people. Instead of a “morning of the living dead” the atmosphere was high and dancefloor full of energetic, smiling people enjoying to get down. Tampere at its best :)

It’s been over four months since Uzu phoned me they’ve found a proper venue for upcoming One events. After two successful years in Tanssitalo, we were sad to leave the old venue behind but clearly this seemed like a proper replacement for a well served humppa-venue. Now, after four months of preparing to get reunited, I think we had a pretty good start last night at Pellava, the new home of One.

It was nice to see drS warming up the floor and filling it in less than an hour with great oldskoolish, proggy vibes (I’m really looking forward to see his full tracklist..), Something Good delivered something good with their new tunes and more housey & bassheavy approach which worked really well and Jussi Soro ended the night with his trademark trancey tunes (including Atlantis Ita’s I See You In The Next Life as encore).

I was happy to see our new re-edits going down really well – the brand new edit of Slusnik Luna’s Sun had its premiere last night and it was nice to see crowd recognizing the Heaven Scent re-edit already long before the main riff hit in. The full tracklist is listed above.

Funktion One & Battery Sound System did their thing, too. It’s been a while when you’ve really felt the music in your chest like that. The stone walls gave an extra *ooomph* to the bass, but also a nasty echo to the DJ-booth, which seemed to bother all the DJs a bit. I heard the same sound system will be used next time at Laterna when Romance enters the venue on 8.5. I can imagine due to smaller venue it’ll be even more intensive sound experience and definitely worth a check.

Battery Sound System also included CDJ-2000s, so this was the first time for me to test them on a gig. I took the most out of it and also used USB sticks instead of CDs. It was reliable, fast and very convinient, but it’ll definitely take a while to get used to browse the music collection on a small screen instead of a CD-case – I still like the physical format. Despite that, I’m really looking forward to CDJ-2000s becoming club standard players – they feel good :)

Anyway, I was happy to see so many people smiling, partying carelessly and getting into Tampere-fiilis. One got a good start at Pellava – sure there were some things which will be done better in the future (and we’re more than happy to hear any suggestions from you) – but nevertheless, we’re now looking forward to early June. On 5.6. Pellava will host another One-event with “Tampere Classics” theme. Awesome night, great sets, happy people and a sold-out night. It was great to test drive Funktion One soundsystem for the first time, too – no wonder they’re saying Redrum has the best DJ booth and sound in Finland. Thanks to everyone involved, more jackjackjack in March.

“Tampere-fiilis” was a late 90′s phenomena in Tampere, purely born in local trance events when melodic trance was at its peak and rave culture enjoyed high popularity. I remember events like Taika ’98 in which people were dancing spontaniously hand-in-hand, club Tunnel with Coma and 3.14Sami spinning in an old, small rock club to 200+ clubbers every second Thursday, everybody going mental. I hope I haven’t become cynical when claiming that nearly a decade has passed in Tampere without any similar feeling of regular PLUR ;)

ONE has succeeded in something that felt like an impossible task a couple of years ago. It seemed that you couldn’t attract any audience without bringing bigger and bigger foreign acts even though it was just the fun and good atmosphere people were after. Saturday night at Tanssitalo, with hundreds and hundreds of people going insane and a lineup consisting of only former and current Tampere talents proved that you don’t need any foreign acts to get loose. Just a club full of your best friends and a long lost Tampere-fiilis :)

After a night like that, I can’t wait to get back to Tanssitalo. See you at the next One, on 30.5.2009.
