This Saturday: Jack – And This Is Fresh!

By UncategorizedNo Comments

Jack - And This Is Fresh!

This Saturday we’ll celebrate Jack’s first year in Redrum – and what a year it has been. Dave Seaman, Nick Warren & Jody Wisternoff sharing the same DJ booth, Matthew Dekay rocking the house at Jean Michel Jarre‘s concert unofficial afterparty, summer vibes at Danceteria cruise afterparty and much more.

I’m really looking forward to the upcoming year – it seems there will be more One & Love events and the future of Jack looks bright too. This Saturday, at Jack’s 2010 season opening, I’ll be joining the decks with the finest and most promising house talents at the moment: morning party hero Paul Easy, fresh prog house duo Something Good, Visions DJ’s from Playground and Romance head-honcho DJ Flight.

This is also my first time behind Redrum’s decks and I’m really excited of finally getting into the groove with much-talked Funktion One soundsystem. They say Redrum has easily the best DJ booth in Finland – can’t wait to get a hands-on experience :)

To get more information about Saturday’s Jack event, head to the Facebook Event page, read the previous blog post about the event or read the artist interviews at Klubitus.org topic.

I had really, really good time visiting Seinäjoki for the first time after ’03 or ’04. Over 700 happily smiling people, awesome lineup, pikkujoulu and one hell of a queue outside guaranteed a p-a-r-t-y. I tested a couple of new edits of ours which went down nicely – one of my favourite moments was the crowd chanting lyrics of Prodigy – Narayan (Orion & Flight re-edit) and going mental with Sami Saari’s Electric Love and Ayleon’s remix of Brotherhood.

Big, big thanks to Syna possé for the invitation (was grreat to see them playing live after a while) and to my fellow DJs Flight, Infekto, Ville Lope, Echostep & Andy K for a good company – not to forget the ever-crazy pohojammaa crowds :) Hoping not to have another 5 year break before returning back there again.
See some photos below and a short video clip of Insomnia played as an encore.

Fiksaatio in Seinäjoki & Sunday Fun in Tampere

By UncategorizedNo Comments

This weekend sees another set of quality events, this time in Seinäjoki & Tampere. On Friday I’ll be heading to the clubbing capital of Pohjanmaa, where grand old Fiksaatio possé have been influencing the local scene for already some time and I was really happy of being invited to their last winter event for this year. Held at Karma, the event also presents Infekto, Syna, Flight, Andy K, Ville Lope and Echostep. I’ll be playing the last slot, starting at 01:30.
Fiksaatio Facebook event.

On Sunday I’ll be joining Tabu’s Sunday Fun chill-out event in Tampere. Getting behind decks to play chill-out is a rare sight, but I’m really looking forward to this one. Sunday Fun concept sounds very promising – cheap booze, huge sofas, board games, comics and Tampere-fiilis(tm) can never go wrong. It’s our independence day, too, so there might be an extra amount of domestic quality chill-out, classics and some new DJ Orion & J.Shore productions in the air. The set should start between 21:00 & 22:00 and last around 2,5h.

And yeah, if you don’t have anything to do on Saturday, join us at Romance in Laterna, Tampere. Manly love behind the decks as Mr.A & Flight will rock the place. House hasn’t been this good in Tampere after the Good Miau! Days :)

Interview for Solaris International

By UncategorizedNo Comments

In addition to making a guest mix for Solaris International some days ago, I answered a couple of questions regarding my past, present & future.

The full interview is pasted below, but feel free to check the original one at Solarstone forums

(If you’re more into reading an interview in Finnish, I recommend checking out Kehto interview.)

This week, we interview Juska Wendland, better known as DJ Orion. Hailing from Finland, he offers us some insight on blogging and ginger. Read on!

Solaris International: Go ahead and give us a little background info…How you got started, in music, then in DJing, and so on.

Orion: I went to my first raves in 1994 in the industrial city of Tampere, Finland. Big raves attracted thousands of youngsters every month there, but the warehouse culture was also very active. That was something totally new for a young kid like me and I got hooked in the music & techno culture relative early. I went out actively, got to know new people, helped my friends organizing and cleaning up the venues and later ended up organizing my own parties.

Now, 15 years later, I’m hosting a radio show on Finnish National Radio (YleX), working at Misc. Management which is the oldest DJ Booking Agency in Finland (www.misc.fi), producing events, DJing and writing chill-out tracks with my brother, J.Shore. It’s lots of work but I’m happy it still gives me the same kicks as when I was a youngster.

SI: I’ve noticed you have a pretty busy blog (www.djorion.fi) with all sorts of neat stuff! Care to give us a guided tour?

Orion: I’m happy I’ve lately seen several DJs and artists starting blogging. Sharing inspiring or fun stuff is often much more interesting than a monthly newsletter or an announcement of the upcoming gigs. After all, artists and DJs are the professionals of the scene – they find often the coolest music, videos and trends first. But why do so few share that stuff to everyone?
The blog @ www.djorion.fi has been running since 2002 and has given me a chance to express my ideas and opinions about the electronic music world, but also to share some entertaining videos & articles which I’ve run into. Some of my favourite topics are copyright, future of music business and flyer art (there’s my digital flyer collection of over 2000 items @ http://bit.ly/orionflyers). I’ve heard that also several people who aren’t that interested in my music still follow my blog, which is just great.

SI: Tell us about a particularly memorable gig.

Orion: Finland is the land of opposites – I’ve been playing at -20C outdoor events and +30C indoor events, but I think I choose the warmer memory here :)
There’s an annual event called Pacifique organized in Espoo, right next to Helsinki. Pacifique is organized in the biggest indoor waterpark in Scandinavia, with 4 different stages, dozens of artists, tropical climate and over 2000 clubbers going crazy in the huge pools. Here’s a nice photo gallery:

http://www.sessions2.com/galleries.php?gallery_id=295&pic_id=103

I’ve been playing there for 3 years in a row and I think it’s easily the most fantastic clubbing experience one can get.

SI: Why did you choose to start producing chill-out tunes?

Orion: For two reasons: I wanted to try something new as a music producer than what I’ve been going as a DJ and I wanted the results to be something which could stand the test of time.
Today the lifespan of an electronic music track is really really short. It’s kind of sad that many good tracks are being hyped only until they are released and after two weeks they are forgotten. I still remember running after some hard-to-find vinyls for months and once I got a copy, the tune stayed in my record bag for the next 6 months – that’s hard to imagine happening anymore. I want to make music which still sounds fresh after years and which doesn’t follow any trends.

I very rarely play chill-out when I DJ – both my radio shows as well as DJ gigs are more prog house / trance influenced. I don’t like being categorized by the music I play or produce. When I started in 1994, there were no “house DJs” or “trance DJs,” it was all about techno or electronic music. And still today, I think people who see themselves as electronic music artists have free hands, they don’t need to think “I’m a deep house producer, I can’t play or produce music like that.”

SI: Alright, now for some non-business questions:
Name one piece of technology you dislike.

Orion: Windows PCs.

SI: Name a vegetable you love or hate.

Orion: Does ginger count as a vegetable? I love it.

SI: You see a coin on the ground. Do you pick it up or shrug it off?

Orion: Pick it up.

SI: What was (or is) your favorite subject in school?

Orion: Psychology.

SI: Finally, what is the biggest influence in your life?

Orion: My son Nils.

SI: Alrighty, thanks for taking the time, and here’s to a great future!

Orion: Thanks a lot!

DJ Orion & J.Shore productions update

DJ Orion & J.Shore productions news, winter 2009

Mango, Orion, J.Shore – Raining In Osaka (DJ Orion & J.Shore remix) (Silk Sofa) will be coming out finally early next year (Jan/Feb). The original was released last spring (check the full package incl samples), but our nearly 9 minute chill-out remix found a good home on Silk Sofa sampler and we believe all the wait was definitely worth it. This is also our first release on Silk label group and hopefully a good start of a good and long relationship.

J.Shore and me will be collaborating again with Mango and the new track see the daylight early next year. Mango, Orion, J.Shore – When All The Ships Are Gone (Mango Alley Recordings) is originally one of the Goodbye Earth EP tracks (see below), now put into progressive house form with two mixes – Main Mix and Shoreliners Remix. I will post a preview on my website soon. This is a sequel to our Raining In Osaka collaboration and even the official release is stll far away, I’m excited about this.

DJ Orion & J.Shore – Goodbye Earth EP (Silk Sofa) was a project we started with my brother last summer. It’s a three track chill-out EP which was originally made in Tampere and finally tweaked in Southern Germany. There is a YouTube video sample if you’re into listening. At the moment it seems there will be a remix EP, too – but I’ll post more details when things get confirmed.

Also, we’ve just finished a remix of Ralphie B’s trance classic Massive. It’s an unofficial remix, full-on 97bpm chill-out (what a combo! ;), a fresh approach to one of my all-time-favourite trance tracks with strings, massive drums and woodwinds.

And finally, our next one, DJ Orion & J.Shore – Brotherhood (Lost Language) will be out on 23.11. More about that on the official newsletter.

Weekend in Tampere & Kalajoki

By UncategorizedNo Comments

On the upcoming weekend I’m playing my last gigs before a short paternity leave. On Friday I’ll be heading to Tampere to Club Play, a summer club running at Apollo. It’s been a while that I’ve played a house set in Tampere and I’m really looking forward to this. My slot should be starting around midnight.

On Saturday I’ll fly to Kalajoki to headline the local Sunburn event, one of the longest running summer club concepts in Northern Finland. I’ve lost my count if this is already the 6th or 7th year in a row I’m visiting Kalajoki in the summer, but it definitely hasn’t lost its vibe. Kalajoki – as mentioned numerous times before – is the “Ibiza of Finland” and the venue, Dyyni, is easily among the coolest clubs in the north with a panorama view to the sea and the whole building standing on a huge sand dune. The house music maestro of the north, DJ Kaasi will be doing the warm-up and I’ll be playing a 2-2,5h set in the end of the night. See the video from last year’s party below or check some photos from the past years.

Sündstoff, Parktheater, Kempten 25.07.2009

Friday night @ ParkTheater, Kempten

This Saturday I’ll be playing at Kempten’s Parktheater, one of the biggest clubs in Allgäu area, South Germany. The club looks awesome (see the photo above) and the mood and music are very German, especially on these house/techno based nights. Local DJ hero Alfredo will be warming up the decks and I’ll be on around 01:00 for a two hour set. See you there! ;)

DJ Orion newsletter, summer 2009

By Radio, UncategorizedNo Comments

Hello hello!

The famous Finnish summer has started (famous for not being sunny and warm as summers usually are:) and it’s a good chance to put together a newsletter of some sort. It’s been an incredible 2009 so far and there are plenty of interesting things to come – here are some selected newsbits.

*** Coldplay – Viva La Vida (Flight & Jontey meet DJ Orion bootleg remix) ***

Early this year I joined Flight & Jontey, a Tampere-based house duo, to make an exclusive bootleg remix for this year’s Labyrinth // Laserpoint event. After the event, a couple of copies were given out and the response was really nice. By now not only for example Tiesto and Jaytech have given thumbs-up for the track but over 100 Scandinavian DJs are playing it regularly. A summer tune for sure :) Thanks for all the nice feedback we’ve gotten for the track – and if you happen not be familiar with the tune, you can check it at YouTube.

*** In the studio with J.Shore and Flight&Jontey ***

Talking about Flight & Jontey, we’re still getting together in the studio this June. Their house & dnb background combined with a bit more proggy influenced taste of mine resulted in nice combos last time and I can’t wait to share the much talked Tampere-fiilis with them again :)
A week ago I finally found time to share a studio with my brother, J.Shore, and continue the chill-out project we started last year with One Sunday and Brotherhood tracks. The result was three new chill-out tracks, which still need some days of work, but I’m hoping to have some samples online by the end of June.

*** DJ Orion – Brotherhood ***

The remixes of Brotherhood, a sequel for One Sunday are now ready. I was really, really happy with the One Sunday remixes and once again the remixers went beyond all the expectations. Ayleon, Flight&Jontey and Anton Sonin deliver their interpretations – something for everyone: Ayleon’s trancey remix, Flight&Jontey’s house&proghouse version and Anton’s progressive trance remix are available for listen at http://orion.reaktio.net/2009/02/dj-orion-brotherhood/.

*** Mango, DJ Orion, J.Shore – Raining In Osaka ***

The Russian-Finnish co-op track “Mango, DJ Orion & J.Shore – Raining In Osaka” climbed the Beatport prog house charts after its release and got very nice feedback. The last version, “Raining In Osaka (DJ Orion & J.Shore remix)” will be released on Mango Alley Recordings sampler in August. Available for listen here: http://orion.reaktio.net/2009/03/mango-orion-jshore-raining-in-osaka-mango-alley/

*** Love ***

After last year’s Metaverse tour, we at Misc. Management have been working together with DJ Orkidea & Jack club, running nights at Redrum with guests like Nick Warren and Matthew Dekay.
Over half a year ago we started planning a new concept called “Love” and to keep it short, you can read more here: http://orion.reaktio.net/2009/05/theres-something-about-love/
We’ve been really busy with the Love opening night, happening on 5.7.2009 with Pete Tong (BBC Radio 1, UK) headlining. Busy or not – it’s anyway been great to be a part of the concept and share the Love to music and club culture :) If you feel like looking, the website is now open at www.lovehelsinki.fi

*** Schedule ***

Despite of all the fun described above, lately I’ve needed to say to “no” to several interesting possibilities, projects, gigs and events. I’m having a short gig break until October, 2009 and concentrating on something which has been by far the most fascinating experience of my life. I’m becoming father in early September – and needless to say, I want to save some quality time to get most out of the days before (and after) the birth :)

*** YleX Tiistain Tanssi-ilta ***

Even though I’ve reduced the amount of gigs, the beats at Tiistain Tanssi-ilta will be served regularly every second Tuesday on YleX at 21:00.
One of the most exciting upcoming shows is on 21.7.2009 when we’ll be having the Tom Middleton retrospective, a show presenting Tom’s whole career in one hour. Not an easy task, but luckily we got help from Tom himself, who will be hosting the one-hour show personally. This is a very, very rare occasion and really worth listening.

Thanks for reading this far – you can catch up with the latest stuff on my blog or download the latest mixes via the podcast, both available at http://orion.reaktio.net

edit: For more news about DJ Taucher remix of Brotherhood & the upcoming gig @ Park Theater, Germany, see here.

Cheeerio! :)
