Yhä useampi DJ on viime aikoina siirtynyt tukemaan yhä enemmän MP3-formaattia musiikkia ostaessaan.
Yhtenä argumenttina MP3-formaattiin siirtymiselle on monen DJ:n kohdalla tarjonnan laajuus. MP3 tuo tarjolle valtavan määrän musiikkia ja valinnanmahdollisuudet ovat huomattavasti suuremmat kuin perinteistä levykauppaa plärätessä.
Olen viime aikoina seurannut erityisellä mielenkiinnolla niin kotimaisten kuin ulkomaalaistenkin DJiden chartteja ja keikka-tracklistejä. Vaikka MP3:n pitäisi tuoda DJ:n ulottuville uutta musiikkia kasapäin, jostain syystä chart- ja soittolistat ovat kaventuneet tarjonnaltaan huomattavasti.
Beatportin ja vastaavien kauppojen kampanjat ja mainonta tuntuvat vaikuttavan isoon osaan DJistä hyvinkin radikaalisti. Suurimman mainostilan MP3-kaupassa saavaa kappaletta ostetaan isolla kädellä ja kärjistetysti sanoen kaupan TOP10 myyntilistat siirtyvät monen DJ:n Personal TOP10:een. Samalla tarjonta sekä yleisölle että DJille tasapäistyy. Ilmiö ei ole uusi, mutta elektronisen musiikin ideologiassa todella vieras.
MP3-kaupat ja -labelit ovat saaneet DJ:t uskomaan, että paljon mainostilaa verkossa tarkoittaa isoa hittiraitaa. Samalla korostuu myös mp3-kaupankäyntiin liittyvä laiskuus. Kuten Mr.A Plastic Fantastic -levykaupan sulkemiseen kommentoidessaan kirjoitti, levykauppojen ja -hyllyjen selaaminen on olennainen osa DJ:n ammattia.
MP3-kulttuuri saa musiikin haalisen näyttämään helpolta ja vaivattomalta, mutta kaataa monta DJ:tä juuri siihen helppouden suohon: valituksi tulevat pääasiassa vain raidat, joita MP3-kauppa ja -labelit toivovat menevän eniten kaupaksi. Nettiselailuun verrattuna vanhalta kirpputorilta tai ulkomaisen levykaupan kätköistä tuntien etsinnän jälkeen tehdyt löydöt tuntuvat kullanarvoisilta. Digitaalinen ei vain ole mitään.
Omaperäisen soundin ja yllättävien biisivalintojen aikaansaamiseksi MP3-kaupat eivät ole antaneet allekirjoittaneelle yhtään mitään. Onneksi vielä löytyy NIIN paljon laadukkaita pienen painoksen levyjä, joita ei koskaan julkaista mp3-formaatissa.

Käväisin viime viikonlopun Tampereen visiitilläni Vapriikin Levynkansinäyttelyssä. MP3-aikakaudella moinen vanhaa pop-kulttuuria esittelevä pläjäys oli vähintäänkin mielenkiintoinen. Kansia on esillä reilusti ja esittelytekstit antavat hyvän kuvan levynkansitaiteen matkasta viime vuosisadan puolenvälin tuolta puolen aina nykypäivään saakka. Erityisesti psykedelia-kannet vetivät suuta hymyyn. Kieroa kamaa :)
Opiskelijat maksavat 2e, muut muutaman euron enemmän. Suosittelen.

Currently making the last plans for collaborative mixtape with DJ Kaasi, I might be able to promise that it will be online by the end of this month.
I’m excited of the result – last time, in March 2005, we mixed 17 tracks together in 60 minutes. Now we might make it still a bit better. The speed is not the reason of excitement, though. Kaasi has a long background in house music – combining his tracks and style with mine produced already last time an interesting wholeness. Let’s see where it gets this time :)
I spent some of the past days photographing around Pyhä-Luosto. Really amazing landscapes and lots of things to see.
Konemetsä Festival took place in Marttila last weekend. I wasn’t able to get there, but here’s a nice 5min video (100mb) from the event. It shows well what the bright Finnish summer nights are made for :) Also a small video documentary from last year’s event is available on YouTube:
First some sad news. I will stop hosting and casting Worldwide Mix Selections podcast.
Worldwide Mix Selections has been quite a successful project. After the 12th of December ’05 we’ve podcasted over 110 different mixes. Each of them has reached 200-400 subscribers. It’s been a nice way to show that there are SO many good deejays around sharing good music of which most of us hasn’t ever heard.
Anyway, I’ll concentrate from now on only on my private podcast on a monthly basis and leave WMS behind. Might be that there is someone who would like to continue the project but if not, the casts will stop in the near future.
Just a note: Mixes are fully functional and online again. Go grab them.
I just received a guest mix for the podcast from DJ Thomas. I have to admit that the quality of all these guest mixes has really surprised me. Most of them have been made by DJs from Northern Finland which just tells about the huge potential of the region. Every guest mix has also its roots in progressive/trance music which would make one to expect cheesy vocal bigroom tracks – but no: every DJ has really shown that progressive/trance music is still vital and so much more to offer than these top XX chart tracks.
DJ Thomas’ mix makes no exception. According to him, it’s a tribute to the older Renaissance sound: a melodic combination of house, progressive and trance. DJ Thomas has gained reputation in the Jyväskylä/Joensuu area but lives nowadays in Tornio, Northern Finland. He really has eye (or ear:) on quality trance and nice collection of sound which you easily could call oldskool these days. His mixes are more or less rare, so it’s more than nice to receive an exclusive one for this podcast.

Hevi- ja kitaramusiikin paremmuutta muunmuassa konemusiikkiin nähden painottava Sue-lehti kirjoitti tammikuussa “asiantuntijan ottein” arvion DJ Orkidean uudesta levystä.
Viimeistään Lordin myötä Suomessa överiksi mennyt hevisekoilu saa Aamulehden kolumnistin kyseenalaistamaan tämän paremmuuden. Myös Sue-lehti saa osansa. pHinnweb scannasi artikkelin iloksemme.
I promised earlier to confirm when everything’s set for moving away from Rovaniemi. So this is it, 100% confirmation. I’ll be heading to Helsinki on the first of August. Interesting autumn ahead.
I think now it’s time more or less to look back. These five years have been incredible in many ways. Here’s a Short Story of the Northern Club Life – the electronic music scene in Northern Finland 2001-2005 as I remember it. Thanks to all of you who were involved in a way or another – you know why :)
