DJDownload.com closes (or does it?)

By UncategorizedNo Comments

DJDownload.com closes its doors. That’s sad. Here’s an email I got into my hands:

“Dear Label Partner
It is with great regret that we have to inform you that DJdownload Limited has been placed into administration by the Directors of the company effective today.

The Directors have worked extremely hard over the past few months to try and save the company: overheads were reduced and attempts to increase revenues were made but ongoing efforts to raise further finance were unsuccessful. Despite their best efforts the company was not able to continue to trade.

We would like to thank you for your support and business over the years and we wish you all the best in the future.

If you have any questions with regard to UNPAID ROYALTIES from DJDownload Limited please contact:

Marguerite Webster – Case Administrator at Bridge Business Recovery
E-mail: marguerite.webster@bridgebr.co.uk
Phone: +44 207 025 6139

Yours sincerely
Justin Pearse”

Now let me predict – Beatport.com will raise their prices within one year.

Edit (06.11.2009): It seems the story is not over. About 24h after the first news, Juno has acquired DJDownload. If anyone has an official link, please post it below. Here’s the official link (thanks to Homegrove!): http://www.junodownload.com/plus/2009/11/06/juno-steps-in-to-keep-dj-download-online/

New Beatport

By Uncategorized2 Comments

Beatport will update January 21st, 2009 and gave a short preview of the features to come.

Finally – a playlist and a possibility for cueing tracks, a long waited feature. The sample seems to be divided to several areas. Is that a feature to listen several samples of the track like at DJDownload? And hopefully they’ve also added a feature to buy only a part of the tracks you’ve added to your cart.

Pros and cons of mp3 shops

Listing the pros and cons of mp3 shops

Beatport:
Pros:
+ Very good RSS-feed. Direct links to mp3s, possibility for listening via feed reader, no need to visit the site. However – the feeds are impossible to find.
+ Keyboard shortcuts. However – rewinding and fast forwarding only work if the sample has fully loaded.
+ Very good podcast with one-click-purchase option (works on iTunes).
Cons:
– No possibility to queue the tracks for listening. Needs constant attention. Wastes your time.

Audiojelly:
Cons:
– Charts. Are there any?
– Default currency is pound.
– Who browses music alphabetically by labels, artists or albums? No one? Why to have these features on every page?
– Podcast – good idea. But Gareth Emery’s podcast – why?
Pros:
+ You got rid of your awful music player with annoying swwwwooooosh flash animations.

DJDownload:
Cons:
– Player on external page. Nasty, evil feature. Get rid of it!
– Where’s your podcast?
Pros:
+ Possibility to queue all the tracks for listening on certain pages.
+ Lowered their prices. Waiting for the call of the other shops…

Did I forget to mention something?
