Weekend in Tampere & Kalajoki

By UncategorizedNo Comments

On the upcoming weekend I’m playing my last gigs before a short paternity leave. On Friday I’ll be heading to Tampere to Club Play, a summer club running at Apollo. It’s been a while that I’ve played a house set in Tampere and I’m really looking forward to this. My slot should be starting around midnight.

On Saturday I’ll fly to Kalajoki to headline the local Sunburn event, one of the longest running summer club concepts in Northern Finland. I’ve lost my count if this is already the 6th or 7th year in a row I’m visiting Kalajoki in the summer, but it definitely hasn’t lost its vibe. Kalajoki – as mentioned numerous times before – is the “Ibiza of Finland” and the venue, Dyyni, is easily among the coolest clubs in the north with a panorama view to the sea and the whole building standing on a huge sand dune. The house music maestro of the north, DJ Kaasi will be doing the warm-up and I’ll be playing a 2-2,5h set in the end of the night. See the video from last year’s party below or check some photos from the past years.

Coldplay remix on Pepsi Max Chart

By UncategorizedNo Comments

Our remix of Coldplay’s Viva La Vida hits the Pepsi Max Chart this week as a “challenger track”. If you like our version of the track, feel free to press the odd looking “äänestä” button (it’s “vote” in Finnish, easy huh?) :)
The samples on the page are awfully short, but you can check the full version on the YouTube clip below.

DJ Orion newsletter, summer 2009

By Radio, UncategorizedNo Comments

Hello hello!

The famous Finnish summer has started (famous for not being sunny and warm as summers usually are:) and it’s a good chance to put together a newsletter of some sort. It’s been an incredible 2009 so far and there are plenty of interesting things to come – here are some selected newsbits.

*** Coldplay – Viva La Vida (Flight & Jontey meet DJ Orion bootleg remix) ***

Early this year I joined Flight & Jontey, a Tampere-based house duo, to make an exclusive bootleg remix for this year’s Labyrinth // Laserpoint event. After the event, a couple of copies were given out and the response was really nice. By now not only for example Tiesto and Jaytech have given thumbs-up for the track but over 100 Scandinavian DJs are playing it regularly. A summer tune for sure :) Thanks for all the nice feedback we’ve gotten for the track – and if you happen not be familiar with the tune, you can check it at YouTube.

*** In the studio with J.Shore and Flight&Jontey ***

Talking about Flight & Jontey, we’re still getting together in the studio this June. Their house & dnb background combined with a bit more proggy influenced taste of mine resulted in nice combos last time and I can’t wait to share the much talked Tampere-fiilis with them again :)
A week ago I finally found time to share a studio with my brother, J.Shore, and continue the chill-out project we started last year with One Sunday and Brotherhood tracks. The result was three new chill-out tracks, which still need some days of work, but I’m hoping to have some samples online by the end of June.

*** DJ Orion – Brotherhood ***

The remixes of Brotherhood, a sequel for One Sunday are now ready. I was really, really happy with the One Sunday remixes and once again the remixers went beyond all the expectations. Ayleon, Flight&Jontey and Anton Sonin deliver their interpretations – something for everyone: Ayleon’s trancey remix, Flight&Jontey’s house&proghouse version and Anton’s progressive trance remix are available for listen at http://orion.reaktio.net/2009/02/dj-orion-brotherhood/.

*** Mango, DJ Orion, J.Shore – Raining In Osaka ***

The Russian-Finnish co-op track “Mango, DJ Orion & J.Shore – Raining In Osaka” climbed the Beatport prog house charts after its release and got very nice feedback. The last version, “Raining In Osaka (DJ Orion & J.Shore remix)” will be released on Mango Alley Recordings sampler in August. Available for listen here: http://orion.reaktio.net/2009/03/mango-orion-jshore-raining-in-osaka-mango-alley/

*** Love ***

After last year’s Metaverse tour, we at Misc. Management have been working together with DJ Orkidea & Jack club, running nights at Redrum with guests like Nick Warren and Matthew Dekay.
Over half a year ago we started planning a new concept called “Love” and to keep it short, you can read more here: http://orion.reaktio.net/2009/05/theres-something-about-love/
We’ve been really busy with the Love opening night, happening on 5.7.2009 with Pete Tong (BBC Radio 1, UK) headlining. Busy or not – it’s anyway been great to be a part of the concept and share the Love to music and club culture :) If you feel like looking, the website is now open at www.lovehelsinki.fi

*** Schedule ***

Despite of all the fun described above, lately I’ve needed to say to “no” to several interesting possibilities, projects, gigs and events. I’m having a short gig break until October, 2009 and concentrating on something which has been by far the most fascinating experience of my life. I’m becoming father in early September – and needless to say, I want to save some quality time to get most out of the days before (and after) the birth :)

*** YleX Tiistain Tanssi-ilta ***

Even though I’ve reduced the amount of gigs, the beats at Tiistain Tanssi-ilta will be served regularly every second Tuesday on YleX at 21:00.
One of the most exciting upcoming shows is on 21.7.2009 when we’ll be having the Tom Middleton retrospective, a show presenting Tom’s whole career in one hour. Not an easy task, but luckily we got help from Tom himself, who will be hosting the one-hour show personally. This is a very, very rare occasion and really worth listening.

Thanks for reading this far – you can catch up with the latest stuff on my blog or download the latest mixes via the podcast, both available at http://orion.reaktio.net

edit: For more news about DJ Taucher remix of Brotherhood & the upcoming gig @ Park Theater, Germany, see here.

Cheeerio! :)

One Summer Starter this Saturday

By UncategorizedNo Comments

This Saturday One returns to Tanssitalo to start the summer. For me this also means a short break with One – unfortunately I can’t be present at the first One of the upcoming autumn (for the reasons I will tell later), so I will definitely make the most out of this experience. Check the One trailer above (fantastic work by joili) and the details below.

ONE Summer Starter

NIKLAS HARDING [Armada, Denmark] OLLIS [YleX] ORION [Misc, YleX]

There’s something about Love.

By UncategorizedNo Comments

LOVE, 5.7.2009, Poster

During the past weeks and days you might have come up with a new club concept, which is launching in Helsinki in early July. The event series has a big name, Love, but the name also tells it all: it’s been made with love to music, to club culture and to people who share the same vibes. It brings us all together.

If you thought Love is korny, it’s a stupid cliché or that people don’t speak about love anymore, check the Love website which presents Love from Twitter is real time. Love is all around us.

I’m very happy that Misc possé (Oded, Asaf and me) are again working with DJ Orkidea and the whole Unity crew. It’s been more than a year after we got together to think through to the concept even close to this size and after the experiences on Metaverse tour, I just can’t wait Love to happen.

On the opening night 5.7.2009, held at the biggest and finest new venue in Helsinki, The Circus, Pete Tong makes his debut gig in Finland. It’s been estimated that over 30 million people hear Pete’s each BBC Radio 1 show which is just h.u.g.e crowd. In comparison, the last episode of Conan O’Brien’s talk show was seen by 3,5 million people. He is one of the most influencial trendsetters of electronic music and the second oldest radio voice on BBC Radio 1.
Culturally speaking, club culturally to be frank, I think Pete Tong is easily among the most important DJ visitors Finland has seen in years.
(And if you thought Pete Tong is a big name, just wait for the upcoming nights… :)

Below is a Love story of Pete Tong. To get more information about the night, why not visit Love Facebook event

Love Story 2: The Artist

There are many reasons why Pete Tong has been called ‘The most powerful person in dance music’ by Muzik Magazine. Or even ‘The god of dance music’ by The Independent. It might be the fact that on a weekly basis, there are more than 30 million live listeners to his BBC1 radio shows ‘Essential Selection’ and ‘Essential Mix’. It might also be the fact that Daft Punk, Underworld, Tiësto, Basement Jaxx, Justice, Eric Prydz and pretty much everybody in dance music hope to get him to be the first to introduce their music to the world. Maybe it’s the fact that since releasing the first ever house music compilation in the UK — ‘The House Sound of Chicago Vol 1’ in 1986 — he has sold millions of compilations for brands such as Pacha, Ministry of Sound, Cream, Mixmag and his very own FFRR label where he’s signed such artists as Orbital and Goldie.

As the icon that he is, Tong was the inspiration behind the film “It’s All Gone Pete Tong”. As a producer he has assembled the music for movie soundtracks such as The Beach, Human Traffic and 24 Hour Party People, and has produced his own material under various guises. He’s one of the biggest crowd pullers in clubland, including his legendery residencies at Pacha Ibiza and Ministry of Sound in London, and headlining slots all over the globe. It seems as if everything Pete touches turns into a long-lasting memory. Which explains why he’s one of the most sought after figures in a scene that’s built around music that turns into an experience.

The dance scene has changed a lot since Pete started, but one thing remains the same: “People love music, make no mistake about that, whether and how they buy it right now is one thing, but people still want to party… it’s our job to come up with new parties, new nights, new venues, new themes to keep the scene fresh and exciting.” Pete still sees his vocation as he did when he started out, playing other people’s records to get an audience dancing. “We need to constantly remember why people want to come to clubs – which is simply to have a great time and feel the music.” And here we are, ready to do just that.

LOVE is delighted to have Mr. Tong play his debut gig in Finland on a night that will be remembered for a long time.

Jack – The unofficial Jarre concert afterparty – tonight

By UncategorizedNo Comments

Jack. The unofficial Jarre concert afterparty.

One of my very early sources of inspiration and fascination lands to Helsinki tonight. Jean Michel Jarre’s “Musik Aus Zeit Und Raum” was among the first LPs I’ve bought and as a teenager I was stunned by the TV broadcasts of his shows in Paris and other massive outdoor venues. This tour, however, is held indoors in its whole, but I’m expecting nothing less.

Jack organizes the unofficial afterparty at Redrum after the concert. Indigo, Orkidea and Matthew Dekay serve the beats. What comes to progressive house jocks, Mr.Dekay is certainly among my favourites. Beautiful Monday/Fucking Friday release on Deep Records turned my eyes on him in 2003 and his releases have been on heavy rotation ever since. I’m really happy that Jack had the possibility of bringing Matthew to Helsinki, really looking forward to his set. For more details, browse to Jack Facebook event.

Copyright claim with UMG & YouTube

Copyright claim dispute with UMG - Flair

A couple of weeks ago YouTube sent me a copyright claim. Content owner, UMG (Universal Music Group) claimed I was infringing their copyright and having illegal content (= music) on my video, called “Flair”.

In this video, filmed back in the day in Kalajoki, after a gig in Dyyni, shows the bartender flairing. It’s 37 seconds long and – indeed – if you listen carefully, there is some music playing in the background. Turn up the volume and you might even recognize the track being performed by Black Eyed Peas.

The Youtube clip is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65EOI3Q6IUE
and if it’s blocked and you can’t see it, feel free to check it here (2,4mb).

Now, judge it yourself – do you think that this amazing piece of video art is fair use of content or copyright infringing?

After my complaint I got a response today from YouTube which can be seen above.
According to the message this video is now blocked everywhere except Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Guam, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, South Korea, Spain, United States, United States Virgin Islands.
And where it’s allowed to be watched, the users will see ads when watching the video.

Just a short final thought – copyright in the form we know it now is dying. Companies trying to “protect” their content is ways like this are not winning the customers to their side but losing them, one by one.

Even though this wasn’t an important video for me at all, this incident pisses me off – a lot.

Other (and much shorter) thoughts about copyright and music business can be read here.

Labyrinth // Laserpoint 2009 vibes

By UncategorizedNo Comments

Labyrinth//Laserpoint 2009

How the time flies… it’s nearly two weeks of this year’s Laserpoint event and I haven’t found a moment to gather all my thoughts. Actually, it’s not only two weeks but a whole year which has passed incredibly fast. One year ago we were equally busy with DJ Orkidea’s Metaverse tour which had its closing moments at Laserpoint 2008.

This year I got a privilege to get into a short chat with Brian Transeau two weeks before the event. Arranging an official interview was a small mess with all the hassle with time differences, phone calls and emails with several managers but I’m happy it finally turned out to be a success and BT’s interview was aired on 14.4.2009 on YleX.
I’m not starting to tell what a great guy he truly is, you can check it out by yourself, the whole interview is listenable here, also including some parts which didn’t fit to the radio show.

The main event was fantastically organized. 3500 people under one roof, but everything from cloackrooms to bars ran smoothly, the lights & visuals were once again superb (thanks for the support, Parker Kane! :), people happily
Labyrinth, 1999, Helsinki, ulkopuolismiling and atmosphere better than ever. Personally I was happy to see Labyrinth returning – it’s mad that it’s already 10 years ago when Labyrinth met Gatecrasher at the same spot. At that time Merikaapeli hall was the mecca of swedish influenced techno and the main trance stars Matt Hardwick and Scott Bond were playing at Puristamo, which was so packed & hot that one could feel the sweat dripping from the ceiling. Talk about hip and trendy raving! ;)

I joined Flight at the main stage to play before Alex Kunnari, the main act BT and Orkidea. We had been preparing re-edits, mash-ups and especially the remix Coldplay’s Viva La Vida for a couple of months before the gig and personally I was thrilled to see the crowd going mental of Sami Saari’s remix of One Sunday and Chase the Sun/Where Are You Now -combo. If you’re into it, see the full tracklist. The video edit of Viva La Vida ended up also on the Labyrinth // Laserpoint 2009 official video .

Sessions2 also made fantastic work and I was happy to find other official photo galleries, too. All the event galleries are gathered together here, take a look if you’re into seeing a couple of photos.

The night ended to the Illusions afterparty where I played a two hour opening set between 05:00 and 07:00. It was nice to see a fully packed morning party, weird to play happy and melodic music at Rose Garden main floor (normally a very techno influenced place), and again thrilling to see people going wild when the sun was already up. The re-play of AfterFlight, a combo of Prydz’s Aftermath and Tiesto’s Flight 643 was a blast and Dan Stone’s remake of Paul van Dyk’s For An Angel as well as Above&Beyond’s remix of Radiohead’s Reckoner were memorable moments.

Thanks for the all the great people I met during the night and morning, it was amazing to share all those moments with you. Big thanks to Joonas, Lauri, Flight, Orkidea, Jontey, Tumpsi, Parker and Juki who were there when needed and made this all happen. You are the lucky ones.

Now, let’s turn the heads towards the sunny summer and let the good times roll :)
