Jori Hulkkonen talks about fame

Jori Hulkkonen about fame:

“Sure enough there’s a lot people who never were “big”, but are they still working? Releasing albums, singles, getting remix requests and DJing all over after 15 years? No. But I am. And this I see as my greatest achievement and there’s a lesson to be learned everyone: If you never become trendy it’s impossible for you to become untrendy.”

The whole interview/article is worth reading. Check also his latest album, Man From Earth.

Review: DJ Hero hands-on.

By Uncategorized

DJ Hero is here. Now unboxing...

I received my copy of DJ Hero today. The game is for Xbox – they didn’t have the Wii versions yet – and as I don’t own Xbox the nice people at Kohu-Live borrowed me one for the two-week test drive.

The package wasn’t anything what the final product is going to be (photo above), but unpacking was cool nevertheless. They should have these “sample” and “promotional copy” stickers on all models – I guess they didn’t make enough field investigation to find out that all the DJs are ready to pay at least triple for anything which has something to do with promo, rare or early copy ;)

The intro with Justice’s Genesis was cool, but made me suspicious of the game contents – action-filled start didn’t seem to fit to the DJ Hero image. However the tutorials with Grandmaster Flash made me forget the rather annoying intro and I was pretty fast fascinated by the controls.

The basic gameplay is really easy if you’re familiar with Guitar Hero or you’ve ever even seen a turntable+mixer combo, but as with Guitar Hero, mastering Hard/Expert levels you really need some time with the game, no matter how much you’ve deejayed before. After the first two hours of playing, I found my limits somewhere between Medium/Hard difficulty and found myself playing some of the tracks over and over again to master some of the most difficult spots.

Most of the mashups I’ve played so far are really smart and the use of crossfader + turntable is really well thought. After two hours of gameplay, my favourites are Eric Prydz – Pjanoo vs. Tears for Fears – Shout and a combo which caused massive laughs: Vanilla Ice – Ice Ice Baby vs. MC Hammer – You Can’t Touch This :)

The idea of backspinning the deck to create re-wind effect and playing some parts of the song immediately again to gain points is a nice feature, but the FX knob (which is basically just a filter) feels in most cases a bit dumb, but definitely raises the difficulty at certain points.

Crossfader isn’t completely loose as I expected beforehand, but locks to left, right & middle. It felt really weird in the beginning as it took much more effort to put the fader exactly to the middle after throwing it to left & right, but it reminds me again – this is just a game, and doesn’t even try to be a 100% real simulation.

The possibility to add a guitar and play DJ vs. Guitar feels like lots of fun, going to try that out later. DJ Hero is definitely at its best when played with friends, definitely the pre-party game of the year and the after-party game of the decade ;)

All-in-all, I probably haven’t been this excited of any game after I got my hands all over the first Wii games some years ago. I’m really looking forward presenting DJ Hero at Extremely Miscbehaving event in Helsinki Club on 24.10.2009 – which reminds me of this: If you’re into winning a copy of DJ Hero, head over to www.misc.fi/djhero, check the event details and participate to the contest.

And if you have any questions regarding the game, feel free to ask below.

Misc. Management & DJ Hero get together

For full info, see www.misc.fi/djhero

Great news! Misc. Management presents the Official DJ Hero Launch Event on 24.10.2009 at Helsinki Club. If you ask me, DJ Hero is one of the coolest and most innovative products in gaming industry in a while and I’m super excited of this possibility.

The launch event is the first chance to get your hands on the game, which will be officially released a couple of days after that. We will also run a contest to give you a possibility to win the game for yourself (Xbox/PS3/Wii).

DJ Hero Launch Event is a part of Extremely Miscbehaving (Facebook Event) event with Andy Moor, Ian Ossia and DJ Orkidea headlining. I will be hosting the game room on the upper floor of Helsinki Club. A good combination of music and entertainment, indeed.

Paul Oakenfold about his gig in Helsinki

By Uncategorized

Thursday August 6: Madonna West Harbour, Helsinki, Finland

The sun is still with us as we cross on the ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki. The ride over is a laugh and the food excellent!

Arriving at the hotel its: out of the car, avoid being run down by cyclist, meet the promoter for tomorrow night club gig at Circus, then check into our hotel. As with all his club gigs on this tour, Paul has his DJ equipment from his rider set up in his hotel room on arrival. This allows him to listen to material for on-going projects (which there are many of) plus new tracks from CD’s to try out for that night’s set. It’s a good system that works on many different levels.

From the dock, we can view the staging on West Harbour (the site for tomorrows concert), it’s massive. Disembarking of the boat, Paul gets talking to a Finnish Madonna fan who praises what an amazing show it was in Tallinn, and how the Finnish crowd will be even better at the tomorrows show. We can believe that, Tallinn was a good crowd but the Finns are known more for expressing themselves.

The following day, leaving the hotel for the gig, the constant flow of traffic seems to head in the direction of the West Harbour. The closer we get, it turns into a procession of people; the whole of Helsinki’s is turning out for Madonna.

Once his arm is taped again, Paul is well enough to play. It’s awkward, but he arrives on stage to an absolute mass of (what later was recorded as) 98,000 people. Still, getting them to warm up and have a good time is no easy job. Gradually, the crowd follows his every gesture until being completely persuaded by the appearance of Madonna’s dancers, who are now a part of this ritual warm up. The sight of this mass of smiling people is 100% satisfying. This has been a most awesome crowd!

DJ Orion newsletter, summer 2009

By Radio, UncategorizedNo Comments

Hello hello!

The famous Finnish summer has started (famous for not being sunny and warm as summers usually are:) and it’s a good chance to put together a newsletter of some sort. It’s been an incredible 2009 so far and there are plenty of interesting things to come – here are some selected newsbits.

*** Coldplay – Viva La Vida (Flight & Jontey meet DJ Orion bootleg remix) ***

Early this year I joined Flight & Jontey, a Tampere-based house duo, to make an exclusive bootleg remix for this year’s Labyrinth // Laserpoint event. After the event, a couple of copies were given out and the response was really nice. By now not only for example Tiesto and Jaytech have given thumbs-up for the track but over 100 Scandinavian DJs are playing it regularly. A summer tune for sure :) Thanks for all the nice feedback we’ve gotten for the track – and if you happen not be familiar with the tune, you can check it at YouTube.

*** In the studio with J.Shore and Flight&Jontey ***

Talking about Flight & Jontey, we’re still getting together in the studio this June. Their house & dnb background combined with a bit more proggy influenced taste of mine resulted in nice combos last time and I can’t wait to share the much talked Tampere-fiilis with them again :)
A week ago I finally found time to share a studio with my brother, J.Shore, and continue the chill-out project we started last year with One Sunday and Brotherhood tracks. The result was three new chill-out tracks, which still need some days of work, but I’m hoping to have some samples online by the end of June.

*** DJ Orion – Brotherhood ***

The remixes of Brotherhood, a sequel for One Sunday are now ready. I was really, really happy with the One Sunday remixes and once again the remixers went beyond all the expectations. Ayleon, Flight&Jontey and Anton Sonin deliver their interpretations – something for everyone: Ayleon’s trancey remix, Flight&Jontey’s house&proghouse version and Anton’s progressive trance remix are available for listen at http://orion.reaktio.net/2009/02/dj-orion-brotherhood/.

*** Mango, DJ Orion, J.Shore – Raining In Osaka ***

The Russian-Finnish co-op track “Mango, DJ Orion & J.Shore – Raining In Osaka” climbed the Beatport prog house charts after its release and got very nice feedback. The last version, “Raining In Osaka (DJ Orion & J.Shore remix)” will be released on Mango Alley Recordings sampler in August. Available for listen here: http://orion.reaktio.net/2009/03/mango-orion-jshore-raining-in-osaka-mango-alley/

*** Love ***

After last year’s Metaverse tour, we at Misc. Management have been working together with DJ Orkidea & Jack club, running nights at Redrum with guests like Nick Warren and Matthew Dekay.
Over half a year ago we started planning a new concept called “Love” and to keep it short, you can read more here: http://orion.reaktio.net/2009/05/theres-something-about-love/
We’ve been really busy with the Love opening night, happening on 5.7.2009 with Pete Tong (BBC Radio 1, UK) headlining. Busy or not – it’s anyway been great to be a part of the concept and share the Love to music and club culture :) If you feel like looking, the website is now open at www.lovehelsinki.fi

*** Schedule ***

Despite of all the fun described above, lately I’ve needed to say to “no” to several interesting possibilities, projects, gigs and events. I’m having a short gig break until October, 2009 and concentrating on something which has been by far the most fascinating experience of my life. I’m becoming father in early September – and needless to say, I want to save some quality time to get most out of the days before (and after) the birth :)

*** YleX Tiistain Tanssi-ilta ***

Even though I’ve reduced the amount of gigs, the beats at Tiistain Tanssi-ilta will be served regularly every second Tuesday on YleX at 21:00.
One of the most exciting upcoming shows is on 21.7.2009 when we’ll be having the Tom Middleton retrospective, a show presenting Tom’s whole career in one hour. Not an easy task, but luckily we got help from Tom himself, who will be hosting the one-hour show personally. This is a very, very rare occasion and really worth listening.

Thanks for reading this far – you can catch up with the latest stuff on my blog or download the latest mixes via the podcast, both available at http://orion.reaktio.net

edit: For more news about DJ Taucher remix of Brotherhood & the upcoming gig @ Park Theater, Germany, see here.

Cheeerio! :)
