Katoaako flyeri?

DJ D.N.A. eli Denis Vakulin aloitti bilekuviot pohjalta, jakamalla flaijereita. Kun teki tutuille vähän töitä, pääsi juhlien nimilistalle.

Nyt takana on kymmenen vuotta bilehommia. Pippalot muistuttavat itsestään kansioissa, jotka pursuavat Vakulinin keräämiä flaijereita, eli pieniä ja isompiakin keikoista kertovia mainoslappusia.
Bilemarkkinointi siirtyy yhä enemmän nettiin, mutta flaijerit eivät vielä ole kadonnutta kansanperinnettä. Flaijerilla järjestäjät nostattavat etukäteen fiilistä. Tunnelmat on mietitty tarkkaan.

– Tämä on vähän hippihenkinen, on haettu positiivista fiilistä. Tässä on isompaa, massiivista assosiaatiota. Valentine’s Dayn synkkä teema herättää mielenkiintoa vastakohtaisuudella, Vakulin selailee kokoelmaansa.
– Flaijerissa yhdistyy taide ja kaupallisuus. Tämä on markkinointisijoitus, hän toteaa.
Suurista summista ei ole kyse. Vakulinin luotsaama I love Kiksu -trancebileorganisaatio ei ole rahallisesti mikään kultakaivos, vaan harrastus jota tehdään talkoovoimin. Toimeentuloa varten on erikseen päivätyö.
Vakulin työstää flaijerit yhdessä tuttujen graafikkojen kanssa. Tiskijukka myös osallistuu flaijereiden jakamiseen.

Paras paikka jalkautumiseen Helsingin keskustassa on City-käytävä. Flaijerinjakajan silmä haarukoi ohikulkijoista potentiaalisia bileihmisiä muun muassa vaatetuksen ja esimerkiksi erikoisten asusteiden perusteella. Tyypillisesti kohderyhmä on 18–30-vuotiasta. Itsepalveluna flaijereita jaetaan bileissä ja vaatekauppojen sekä baarien tiskeillä.

Vakulinin mukaan esimerkiksi 500 hengen bileitä varten on otettu noin 2 000 kappaleen flaijeripainoksia. Flaijerin perässä bileisiin on voinut tulla muutama sata henkeä, hän uskoo.

Painokone porisee paino- ja tulostustalo KopioNiinillä Pitäjänmäellä. Näistä koneista on vuosien varrella suoltunut ulos keikkaflaijeri poikineen. Nykyään flaijereita kuitenkin painetaan vähemmän kuin vielä 4–5 vuotta sitten.

Myyntipäällikkö Tiina Simosen mukaan taustalla vaikuttaa muun muassa nykytekniikka, joka mahdollistaa pienemmät painosmäärät: yksittäisen järjestäjän ei tarvitse tilata kerralla yhtä suurta määrää flaijereita, vaan hän voi jakaa tilauksensa sekä flaijereihin että vaikka julisteisiin. Lisäksi pinnalla on nyt ekologisuus. Paksun ja kiiltävän paperin sijaan monet painon asiakkaat ovat kiinnostuneita uusista ympäristöystävällisemmistä paperityypeistä.

Flaijerimallisia lehtisiä KopioNiini tekee yhä paljon messuille ja muihin tapahtumiin. Pienet keikkajärjestäjät sen sijaan siirtyvät ilmoittelussa nettiin, ja isommat musiikkialan asiakkaat luottavat julisteiden tehoon. Julisteessa viesti tavoittaa useamman silmäparin kuin kädestä käteen jaettavassa flaijerissa.

– Tosi moni karsii markkinointikuluja, juliste on huomattavasti näkyvämpi, sanoo Kuudennen linjan ravintolapäällikkö Kimmo Onttonen.
– Niitä laitetaan ihan ympäri kaupunkia ravintoloihin, tuulikaappeihin ja vaate- sekä levykauppoihin.
Tosin monetkaan kaupat ja ravintolat eivät Onttosen mukaan ota enää flaijereita, sillä ne päätyvät usein lattialle.
– Ja kyllähän flaijerit maksavat aika paljon. Niiden materiaali ei voi olla pelkkää paperia, vaan aina vähän paksumpaa, kiiltävää ja muuta.

Silloin kun flaijereita tehdään, samasta läpykästä löytyy usein vaikka koko kuukauden ohjelma. Näin esimerkiksi Mbarissa.
– Erillisistä, yksittäisistä klubeista ei enää tehdä flaijereita niin kuin aiemmin, jos puhutaan sellaisista klubeista, joita järjestetään tämäntyyppisissä ravintoloissa ja kahviloissa, sanoo Jukka Almén Mbarista.
– Tänä päivänä jos ajatellaan meidän asiakaskuntaa, klubimarkkinoinnissa se tavoitetaan aika pitkälti Facebookin kautta.

Yksittäisiä flaijereita tehdään lähinnä isompiin tapahtumiin. Lisäksi flaijereita käyttävät jotkut pienet tapahtumajärjestäjät, kuten teatterinäyttämöt.

DJ Denis Vakulin uskoo, että flaijerit eivät kuitenkaan häviä. Vaikka netissä markkinointi on halvempaa ja tehokkaampaa pienellä järjestäjälle, joskus voi pyöräyttää painetunkin flaijerin.
– Niiden kautta saa näkyvyyttä. Nimi näkyy ja vahvistaa brändiä, että me olemme hengissä ja läsnä, ja tehdään juttuja.

Pitkät perinteet

HISTORIA. Flaijeri (tai esimerkiksi flaikku, flyer, flyeri, flaba tai tyrkky, englanniksi flyer tai flier), on ollut osa keikkakulttuuria jo vuosikymmeniä. Flaijereita on keräilty ja flaijeritaiteelle on omistettu netissä fanisivuja ja taidegallerioissa näyttelyjä.

Tyylisuunnat ovat vaihdelleet vuosikymmenestä toiseen. Flaijereista graafisen suunnittelun opinnäytetyön Metropolia-ammattikorkeakouluun kesällä tehneen Pekka Ihalaisen mukaan flaijereiden kuvasto ja tyylit heijastelevat näkyvästi oman aikansa musiikkivaikutteita.
Esimerkiksi 1960-luvun kantava tyyli oli psykedeelisyys, kun taas 1970-luvulla tuli muotiin punkhenkinen kollaasityyli. 1980- ja 90-lukujen klubikulttuuri puolestaan näkyi flaijereiden räikeissä väreissä ja popkulttuurikuvastossa.

There’s a nice collection of Finnish Flyers and electronic music articles online on Flickr, say, over 1800 of them.

Now, we would need your help.

When you browse the collection, please add any describing tags to the flyers. Anything will do, names, years, cities, performers, designers etc…

That’s what makes the collection easier and more effective to browse and search. The more the tags, the better.

Misc news from the scanner’s lair

I just realized it’s been one year since I joined Misc. Management team. It’s been an incredible year with Peled brothers and the artists we support (and who support us :). Even though the year has passed unbelievably fast, it’s been full of good moments – and hard work. Big thanks for everyone making this possible.

At the moment we are working on DJ Orkidea’s album release tour, starting early next year. I’s going to be a tour to remember, loads of new add-ons, fresh, trendy & cool supporters, interesting artists and venues. In addition to the tour, I’m also looking forward to Misc revealing the new foreign artist on the roster. He’s cool, classic and very oldskool. For the upcoming updates, see www.misc.fi – and while waiting, download a couple of mixes, there are some new ones around.

The flyer scanning project is over and it was time to grab some new stuff to scan. Not that I particularly love scanning, but it’s more or less cool to digitalize part of the electronic music history in Finland. I got Orkidea’s techno article collection and scanned over 150 news articles and old magazine advertisements starting from 1993. They are just awesome – the grand old men of techno looking like school boys, talking very serious about this new thing called techno music and guys like Sam Inkinen ranting about machines and techno philosophy. They’ll be published on Orkidea’s site first and then right here. While waiting, check the online Flyer Collection which just got bigger and exceeded the limit of 1600 flyers.

P.S. The article up there is a story of Grandmaster Flash visiting Finland back in 1985. The original story was released in Suosikki magazine. Mad, isn’t it? :) Found the article from DJ Anonymous’ blog.

Over 300 new flyers online

I used the past weekend browsing through Orkidea’s flyer collection. I managed to scan a bit less than half of them, nearly 500 images, of which 300 are now online. Pretty NoLife(tm) project, but lots of fun.

After a very long time I came up with a flyer which made me look twice. This digital copy looks a bit lame, but a paper version really rocks. No glossy paper, no spot colours or fancy fonts. Just a cool idea and very good looking graphics. Definitely the flyer of the month. I’m happy people still make stuff like this.

2006 look-back.

To start the double-o-seven properly, I guess it’s time to sum up some of the moments of the past year.

Left Rovaniemi behind and moved to Helsinki. Getting a possibility of being part of Misc Management and working with some of the nicest guys in the southern electronic music scene has been more than delightful. The future looks exciting.

Got a possibility to travel a lot. Loved the Birkweiler wine fields. Saw Belfast, both sides of it.

Graduated. Wrote the Pro Gradu about Flyers in Electronic Music Culture.

After waiting for 11 years, finally saw Underworld live. Also enjoyed the Unity 10th Anniversary, both being the highlights of this year.

Finished remix of EBTG’s “Missing” and a remake of Innerself’s “Gautama”, released seven DJ-mixes and a couple of radio sets. Buried Worldwide Mix Selection podcast project and concentrated on DJ Orion’s podcast with a plenty of hi-quality guest mixes from Finnish artists.

Disliked Teosto and Gramex. Enjoyed some very good movies. Got sentimental while moving away from the north and couldn’t help looking back.

Experienced some very nice gigs such as Spinni in Tampere, Choon! in Turku, Rio88600 in Sotkamo and Sunburn in Kalajoki to mention just a few. Got new friends and got together with the old – humble, simple and honest people, who I – once again – just can’t give enough credit.

Made a new year resolution last year not to involve in any event production or promotion in spring 2006 – and got hands on way too many projects. Expecting the same to happen this year again.

Kalevan Peto-liitteen tekemä juttu flyereistä ja flyerikulttuurista on nyt online ja luettavissa. Ainoa häiritsevä tekijä on flyereistä kirjoittaminen suomalaiseen tapaan “flaijereina”, muuten juttu kiikkuu aika hyvin uskottavuuden paremmalla puolella.
